Voters in Oluponna Ward 2, Ayedire Local Government Area of Osun State, had a bad day trying to exercise their civic responsibility in the presidential election held on Saturday.

There were instances of delay in accreditation and voting at the centre, and some voters complained about vote buying and voter inducement by party agents.

In the midst of this, however, was Posi, a person living with disability. Despite the many challenges being experienced at his polling unit, Posi chose to endure the unbearable heat from the scorching sun so he would not be out in the exercise.

Posi, sitting in his wheelchair, told FIJ that he had been at the polling unit for more than three hours, defying the odds just like other voters.

“My brother, I have been here for the past three hours, enduring this sun. It is hard, but it is worth it. However, it could have been easier if INEC had arranged for at least two canopies to shed us from this scorching sun,” Posi said.

A party agent, who asked not to be named, told FIJ that “the APC and the PDP ought to have provided money to install canopies for corps members and their assistants in order to make their job less difficult”.

“I think INEC did not provide money for such things since this place is an open space. In situations like this, our parties should have paid for makeshift tents to provide shield for everyone,” the agent said.

FIJ also learned that the INEC ad hoc staff deployed to the unit proposed counting voters in the queue in an attempt to prevent prospective voters who could arrive late from visiting the location and exercising their rights.

The voters present, however, protested, threatening to “show the ad hoc staff” if they chose to carry out their plan.
