Yusuf Balogun, a Lagos State-based freelance journalist, has accused Grey, a Nigerian financial services company; and Payoneer, an American payment platform, of holding on to his £119 for no reason.

Balogun told FIJ that despite requesting that the money be transferred from Payoneer to his Grey account since November 24, both institutions had continued to keep him in the dark on the status of the transaction.

“After getting paid for a story I did for an international media outfit, I requested for the payment from Payoneer on November 24. The money, which is £119, was to be transferred to my Grey account,” said Balogun.

“I would even say the genesis of the whole transfer problem is Grey. During the period I requested for the money to be transferred by Payoneer to my Grey account, Grey had embarked on an account upgrade exercise without duly notifying its customers.

“When Payoneer initiated the transfer, the money ended up entering a wrong Grey account because of the upgrade they did.”

The journalist said despite Grey’s several assurances that he would soon get his money, he was yet to receive it.

Transfer Record

“It has been a month since I initiated the payment and I am yet to receive it. Now, Grey is saying it has returned the money to Payoneer. Payoneer on the hand is saying that the money is not in it’s custody. I am yet to receive any positive news from both institutions,” Balogun said.

FIJ sent a mail to Payoneer, but it had not been responded to at press time.

When FIJ contacted Grey on the same matter, one of its officials, who simply introduced herself as Rachel, once again requested that Balogun contact the institution himself.

“Please ask the user to reach out to ‘support’, as we will be unable to share details of a user’s transaction with you,” she said.
