20.03.2023 Featured Authorities Silent 48 Hours After Nnamdi Chude’s Arrest

On Sunday, Chukwuma Soludo, the Anambra State Governor, confirmed the arrest of Nnamdi Chude, a frontline Labour Party supporter in the state.

Chude was said to have been arrested by the Anambra State INTERPOL’s cyber security unit on Saturday and whisked to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Sunday.

It has been two days since his arrest, and the authorities have not disclosed his offence or whereabouts.

Soludo has denied involvement, stating, “The Anambra State Government has no information about the specific allegations or basis of his arrest.”

Some Nigerians on social media, however, think otherwise, alleging that Chude was arrested because of a tweet he made about Soludo and his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Since his arrest, citizens and organisations have continued to call for his release.

On Sunday, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) threatened to sue the Federal Government if Chude was not released within 24 hours.

Frank Nweke, APGA gubernatorial candidate in Enugu, condemned his arrest, stating, “For the past 36 hours, we have been working to have Nnamdi Chude released by the police or, at least, be told the exact reasons for his arrest.”

Nweke, who attributed Chude’s arrest to possible political affiliations, urged the police to disclose the reason for his arrest and allow him legal representation or release him.

Economic policy expert Oby Ezekwesili also called on the Inspector General of Police to “disclose his crime”.

She said according to updates from Governor Soludo, the Anambra State police arrested Chude for crimes on cyber security and he was taken to Abuja afterwards.

FIJ phoned Adejobi Olumuyiwa, the Force Headquarters Public Relations Officer (PPRO); Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Force Criminal Investigative Department; and Garba Baba Umar, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) but received no response.

Messages sent to them had also not been responded to at press time.
