Ayodeji Daniel, a final year student at the National Open University (NOUN), has narrated how N60,000 vanished from his Zenith Bank account without his authorisation.

Daniel told FIJ that the incident happened on Thursday, while he was trying to pay his tuition.

“I was trying to make my school fee payment, because our exams would start on May 6, when the incident happened,” Daniel said.

“I credited my Zenith Bank account with N60,000, but while trying to make payments into the school account, I was unable to access the account through the bank’s mobile application.

“Moments after this, I suddenly saw a debit of N59,900. Before I could react, a N53.75 NIP charge notification also entered my phone. In the end, I lost the sum even before I got to use it to pay my school fee.”

Daniel said he immediately visited the Zenith Bank branch in Ketu, Lagos, to lodge a complaint but was told by the official he met that it was possible he had compromised his account and debit card details.

“Immediately the official made that statement, I made him understand that I specifically used the account for savings so I could use the proceeds for my school fee payment,” Daniel said.

“I have also never compromised my debit card in any way because I am very careful with its use. I have never given out its details to anyone.

“Now, I may be prevented from writing my exams because of my inability to pay my fees. My academic progress is now being threatened because of the unauthorised debit I got on my Zenith Bank account.”

Daniel said he was eventually asked by the official to write a complaint letter and he did.

“After I submitted the letter, I was told that whoever accessed my account had transferred the N60,000 to a WEMA Bank account. She, however, did not give me the account name,” the student said.

“Please, I need the money reversed into my account. If I don’t make that payment before exams start, I may likely not graduate on time. It’s my final exams.”

On Friday evening, FIJ made phone calls to Ogheneochuko Itemeh, one of the Zenith Bank officials Daniel had been liaising with on the matter, but they were not answered. He had also not responded to FIJ’s text message at press time.
