Otobong Christopher (not real name), a resident of the Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State, has narrated how mobile police officers deployed to the venue of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primaries in the state killed Abdulrasheed Inuwa, a motor park chairman.

Christopher told FIJ that the police shot Inuwa to death on Sunday when they tried to disperse the crowd at the Billiri College of Education, the venue of the primaries.

He stated that Inuwa was with Ali Isah, his boss who was contesting in the primaries for a House of Representatives membership, when Rambi Ayala, Isah’s opponent, arrived at the venue.

“Ayala’s arrival made the place so disorderly because his supporters started shouting his name. They threw him up in the air in celebration of him. The place became so crowded that if you were not a delegate, the police would send you out,” he told FIJ.

“The mobile police sent the crowd out to the other side of the road, and this got them angry. They started picking stones and throwing them at the officers who were shooting into the air to disperse the crowd.”

Christopher said that a certain officer got out of the venue after they had dispersed the crowd to see what was happening, and then he brought his gun to waist level and started shooting at the crowd the second time.

“This was how a bullet strayed and killed Inuwa, who was standing far from the road. He was not with those engaging the police officers,” he said.

“He died immediately after the officer shot him. The officers left his corpse where they shot him for hours until the police from the Billiri LGA came to pick up his corpse and took it to a hospital.”

Christopher said as of Tuesday morning, Billiri residents had identified two other corpses in the gully around the venue of the election.

Richard Inuwa, the immediate younger brother of the deceased, told FIJ that his brother was unarmed and far from where the crowd was when the officer shot him.

“They shot him at 4 pm, but they left his remains there till 8 am the following morning as though he was an animal. We have buried him, but my family is demanding justice for my brother,” he stated.

“Everyone testified that a police officer shot my brother. We want justice.”

When FIJ called Mahid Mua’zu Abubakar, the Gombe State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), he said there was a case of homicide and it was not linked to the PDP primaries.

“Yes, there was a case of homicide by unknown [persons] at Billiri, which we are currently investigating, but it has no connections with the PDP primaries that took place in the said LGA,” he said.
