A judge of the US state of Oregon sentenced Nancy Crampton Brophy, author of an online essay called How to Murder Your Husband, to life in prison for the murder of her husband on Monday.
Crampton was found guilty of shooting Daniel Brophy, her spouse, last month. First responders found Daniel shot twice in the kitchen of the Oregon Culinary Institute where he worked in June 2018. Daniel was a chef and teacher, and he had been married to Crampton for 26 years at the time of his death.
Daniel’s widow was convicted of his murder in May.
A 12-man jury in Multnomah County, Oregon, found that Crampton murdered Daniel for a $1.5 million life insurance pay-out. This sentence marks the conclusion of the four-year legal battle for justice over the murder of Daniel.
Detectives obtained footage from a nearby pizza restaurant, which showed Crampton drive by the culinary institute in a Toyota minivan on the morning of her husband’s murder.
Although the police never found the murder weapon, Crampton was shown to have purchased a gun of the same make and model. She could not deny driving around the institute.

Daniel’s friends and family members read statements before the judge sentenced 71-year-old Crampton.
“You opted to lie, cheat, steal, defraud and ultimately kill the man that was your biggest fan. You were–to borrow from your catalogue–the wrong wife,” said Nathaniel Stillwater, Daniel’s son from a previous marriage.
Crampton’s life sentence, handed down on Monday, comes with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
