Gunmen have killed Mohammed Hassan, a 37-year-old nurse working with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, in the Shikafi area of Zamfara State.

According to MSF, Hassan was killed on Saturday when armed individuals opened fire on the public vehicle he was travelling in.

“Another person was wounded in the unprovoked attack,” MSF said in a Twitter thread. “Our thoughts at this time are with his family and friends. We are supporting them in these difficult circumstances.

“Muhammad’s tragic death is an example of the rising violence in northwest Nigeria that is deeply affecting the lives of the population and has driven thousands of people from their homes.

“Medecins Sans Frontieres condemns the attack and calls for the respect of civilians and humanitarian workers.”

MSF, an international medical humanitarian organisation, provides medical assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare.

“In Zamfara, MSF provided medical humanitarian assistance to the populations of Anka, Gusau and Zurmi,” the organisation revealed. “In Shinkafi, MSF teams run a 33-bed therapeutic feeding centre and an inpatient paediatric department in Shinkafi General Hospital.”

Zamfara is among the Nigerian states worst hit by banditry and kidnapping. For almost one month, telecommunication was shut down in the state to curtail the activities of the bandits.
