Olaniyan Naheem, a Lagos State resident, has accused Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) of lying about resolving a disputed N115,000 transfer he initiated last year.

He transferred N115,000 to his sister’s Opay account on December 20, 2022, but she did not receive the money even though GTBank deducted it from his account.

Speaking with FIJ, Naheem explained that he was preparing for his wedding that month, and his sister needed to help him get the groomsmen’s clothes.

“I had to urgently source for another money that period when her account was not credited,” he said.

The Lagos resident reported the incident at three different branches of GTBank, hoping that the money would either get to her sister or be reversed.

“I have gone to the GTBank in Agbara, Victoria Island and Festac several times with respect to this transaction. I went to Agbara two times in December. When I did not hear from them, I went to Victoria Island on January 10,” he said.

“In Victoria Island, the bank said the money was reversed and asked me to give it time to reflect in my account. They said the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS) had issues during that period, hence the issue.”

While Naheem was waiting for some good news, he received a strange email from GTBank on February 1, claiming that his complaint had been resolved.

But this was not the case because his sister’s account had still not been credited with the N115,000.

In the email provided by Naheem, GTBank wrote that “the transfer was successfully transmitted to the beneficiary’s account”.

“My sister went to Opay office in Ibadan on February 1 after I got the message from my bank. She checked her transaction history with an official. The money was not there,” Naheem told FIJ.

“I went back to the Festac branch on February 3, where I was told that nothing had been done yet. They said it would be resolved soon, that they would work on it.”

A bank official identified as Chioma Eze told FIJ the complaint had been reactivated and was receiving attention. She also said that feedback would be communicated to FIJ as resolution was between 24 and 48 working hours.

“I am sorry to hear that [the] transaction was not processed successfully. I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused,” she said.
